1 Carat Diamond Ring – Why 1 Carat?

Carats are the unit of measurement used to express the weight of diamonds, so carat weight relates directly to the actual size of the stone. The 1 carat diamond ring is one of the most common sizes for commercially available diamonds, and it’s widely considered one of the ideal sizes for the purposes of most consumers. Diamonds larger than 1 carat can be prohibitively expensive, so they’re usually out of the question for most shoppers. At the same time, larger diamonds do have a certain attraction, so many consumers do prefer to go with 1 carat diamonds rather than more affordable, smaller ones.

A 1 carat diamond ring is a classic choice because the size of the diamond is sufficient to enable it to really stand out in any type of ring setting, whether it’s a solitaire, or when paired with other, smaller stones.

1 Carat Diamond Ring – Choosing A Diamond

1 carat diamond ringCarat weight isn’t the only factor that determines the price of a diamond. The other major factors are the grades found on a diamond’s certificate, namely cut, clarity, and color.

Depending on these grades, a 1 carat diamond ring can typically cost anywhere from around $3,000, to upwards of $20,000. A $20,000 1 carat diamond will have the highest grades across the board. For a great-looking diamond, though, it really isn’t necessary to spend so much. Usually, even diamonds with grades in the middle ranges will look just as good to the naked eye, and at a fraction of the cost.

We recommend avoiding diamonds with the highest clarity and color ratings for this reason. The cut rating has a smaller impact on diamond prices, but in some cases, the highest cut ratings can also carry a disproportionately high premium. For the best value, try to narrow your search to diamonds with a cut rating in the “Very Good” to “Good” range, a clarity rating of SI1-2 (or VS1-2 in the case of emerald or cushion cut diamonds), and a color rating of G-I, as these will provide the best balance between appearance and price.

The shape of the diamond also has an impact on price. You can usually find a good selection of 1 carat diamond rings and loose diamonds at most quality diamond stores in any shape of your choosing, but once you start narrowing your search down to diamonds within certain rating ranges, the selection within some of the more uncommon or specialized shapes (especially the heart shape) can start to dwindle.

For a 1 carat diamond ring, you’ll probably have the most success going with round brilliant or princess cut diamonds, as these are the most common shapes, and so they’ll provide you with a better selection and a better chance of finding a diamond that suits your needs.
