This Bluenile review looks at one of the top online diamond retailers and how it compares to others. Blue Nile was one of the first stores to offer a large selection of loose diamonds and other diamond jewellery to customers online, and remains one of the most popular destinations for shoppers. What kind of service does it offer today? Here’s what we found.
Products
For most online diamond stores, loose diamonds are the main attraction, and that’s no different in the case of Blue Nile. What is different about Blue Nile when compared to the competition is the sheer size of its diamond collection. At the time of review, Blue Nile offered over 77,000 loose diamonds, by far the biggest selection among all of the major online sellers. Not only is Blue Nile’s selection large, it’s also broad, with all major diamond shapes, and even some less common ones, available. If you’re looking for loose diamonds, it’s well worth taking a look at Blue Nile’s selection, simply because the huge volume here means that you’re more likely to find something that meets your specifications.
In addition to loose diamonds, Blue Nile offers the usual range of other products and services including a range of “design your own” options for use with loose diamonds, and preset wedding and engagement rings, among other pieces.
Search
Blue Nile’s search is also outstanding, helping to narrow down those 77,000 diamonds to a more palatable number in a simple, yet powerful way. You can narrow or sort your results by shape, price, carat, color, cut, clarity, and even some advanced criteria such as fluorescence, polish, and price per carat. Details about individual diamonds are provided in a sidebar when you hold the cursor over them, which is another helpful little feature not provided by some of the other online diamond stores.
Inspection
Blue Nile provides a set of images for each diamond, including actual top-down and side photos as well as measurement and comparison graphs and the full range of information provided by the diamond’s certificate. In terms of overall inspection options, Blue Nile is good, if not quite as good as James Allen.
Service and Guarantees
Blue Nile’s customer service and support is top notch, with 24/7 telephone service among the highlights, in addition to live chat and email support options. They also offer a 30-day return policy and one year of free resizing service.
Shipping
Blue Nile provides free shipping with FedEx for all US orders. The exact FedEx service used depends on the value of the order, with orders of $500 or more being shipped with Priority Overnight service. International orders get free FedEx International Priority service, so overall, Blue Nile’s shipping policies are relatively generous.
